چکیده

The decay of 182Hf, now extinct, into stable 182W has developed into an important chronometer for studying early solar system processes such as the accretion and differentiation of planetesimals and the formation of the Earth and the Moon. The only 182Hf half-life measurements available were performed 40 years ago and resulted in an imprecise half-life of (9+/-2)x10(6) yr. We redetermined the half-life by measuring the specific activity of 182Hf based on two independent methods, resulting in a value of t(1/2)(182Hf)=(8.90+/-0.09)x10(6) yr, in good agreement with the previous value, but with a 20 times smaller uncertainty. The greatly improved precision of this half-life now permits very precise intercalibration of the 182Hf-182W isotopic system with other chronometers.

Settling the half-life of 60Fe: fundamental for a versatile astrophysical chronometer.

In order to resolve a recent discrepancy in the half-life of 60Fe, we performed an independent measurement with a new method that determines the 60Fe content of a material relative to 55Fe (t1/2=2.744  yr) with accelerator mass spectrometry. Our result of (2.50±0.12)×10(6)  yr clearly favors the recently reported value (2.62±0.04)×10(6)  yr, and rules out the older result of (1.49±0.27)×10(6)  ...

Using Aluminum-26 as a Clock for Early Solar System Events

Written by Ernst Zinner Washington University, St. Louis, MO Our solar system formed 4.6 billion years ago. Primitive meteorites provide samples that were formed in its earliest days and thus can give us information about this period. To establish the sequence of events during solar system formation on a time scale of a million years radioactive isotopes that decay with half-lives comparable to...

THE Cs-Ba CHRONOMETER AND THE ORIGIN OF EXTINCT NUCLIDES IN THE SOLAR

Introduction: A number of now extinct shortlived nuclides, with half-lives ranging from ~10 (Ca) to 10 years (Sm), were present in the early Solar System and provide constraints on chronometry, nucleosynthetic sources of early Solar System materials and provide a tool for identifying the environment where the Solar System formed (such as isolated star formation versus formation in a cluster of ...

MAGNESIUM DIFFUSION IN MINERLAS IN CAIs: NEW EXPERIMENTAL DATA FOR MELILITES AND IMPLICATIONS FOR THE Al-Mg CHRONOMETER AND THERMAL HISTORY OF CAIs

Introduction: Ca-Al-rich inclusions (CAIs) consist of high temperature minerals that represent the oldest known solid objects in the solar system. The CAIs are known to have contained the short-lived ra-dionuclide 26 Al, which decays to 26 Mg, and has a half-life of 0.72 Myr. The 26 Al-26 Mg decay system provides a high-resolution relative chronometer for the CAIs [e.g., 1]. However, the chrono...

Deep-Ocean Crusts as Telescopes: Using Live Radioisotopes to Probe Supernova Nucleosynthesis

Live 60Fe has recently been detected in a deep-ocean ferromanganese crust, isolated in layers dating from about 3 Myr ago. Since 60Fe has a mean life of 2.2 Myr, a nearEarth supernova is the only likely source for such a signal, and we explore here the consequences of a supernova origin. We combine the 60Fe data with several supernova nucleosynthesis models to calculate the supernova distance a...
